Regardless of your career path, there’s something for everyone in the defence industry

Over the years, Loren has worked in events across a myriad of industries, but her latest career move is proof that you don’t need to be an engineer or join the Defence Force to find your place in the defence industry.

After graduating from high school, Loren pursued an Advanced Diploma in Business Marketing and immediately put her new-found skills to use.

Her keen eye for detail and meticulous organisational skills quickly led her down the path of event management; a fast-paced career path that keeps even the most organised and experienced events professionals on their toes.

“Once I started working in events, I didn’t look back,” she said, reflecting on 18 years in industry.

“Over the years, I’ve worked across a range of industries in my career, coordinating events for anywhere between five and 5000 attendees.”

Loren’s wide range of industry experience is proof that her expertise is in high demand. “I’ve worked with companies in almost every sector imaginable. From medical and agriculture to IT and education; wherever the need for a well-run event is required, I’m there.”

The majority of Loren’s career was spent in Sydney, but in 2018 she opted to move back to her hometown of Adelaide. “While the move back was a personal choice, it’s since opened so many doors for the advancement of my career.”

She noted that South Australia continues to evolve and grow year-on-year. “I have noticed a significant increase in employment and innovation; particularly in the space and defence industries.”

Prior to ASC, Loren was exposed to the defence industry through the Trailblazer program while working as a freelancer at the University of Adelaide.

“A job post came up for ASC – perfectly suited to my skill set – and I decided to apply. I joined ASC in September 2023 and haven’t looked back.”

“ASC is great place to work,” she said. “The environment is dynamic, the culture is great, the team is supportive and it’s a great place to grow and learn.”

Loren’s role blends duties related to external event coordination with the management of external VIP visits to ASC. “No two days are the same,” she noted. “From handling VIP visits, coordinating external events and exhibitions to handling PPE and merchandising requirements.”

Loren highlights the coordination of the SSN-AUKUS submarine build press conference and the 2023 Indo Pacific International Maritime Exhibition as two career highlights to date. “A lot has happened in a short space of time and that’s what I love about events – it’s fast paced and exciting.”

Her advice to anyone looking to enter the defence industry is simple: “Throw your hat in the ring.”

“You don’t need to be an engineer or a tradesman to get involved. If you have the skill set and you are willing to learn, then this is the place for you,” she added.

“The South Australian defence industry continues to carve out career paths at every level and the opportunities are endless,” she said.

Looking to the future, Loren’s goal is to continue growing in a role in which she feels “challenged, happy and secure”.
