An inaugural cohort of 30 trainees and apprentices have commenced into two new pathways programs aimed at boosting South Australia’s skilled workforce for the defence industry.
The programs, the Defence Industry Pathways Program and the Shipbuilding Employment Pathways pilot initiative, mark a significant step towards ensuring the future of Australia’s defence sector.
With major projects including the delivery of the conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines and Hunter class frigates slated for the state, ensuring the workforce is equipped with the necessary skills will be crucial to success.
“The SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine program represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for South Australians to be a part of a world-leading Defence project,” said South Australian Minister for Defence and Space Industries, Stephen Mullighan.
“These programs are not only a critical investment in the future of our state’s workforce, but they also open the door to high-quality, secure careers in one of the most pivotal sectors for Australia’s national security.”
After successfully supporting hundreds of trainees in Western Australia, the Defence Industry Pathways Program aims to support 150 trainees over the next three years as part of its expansion into South Australia, providing a 12-month paid traineeship across various sectors of the defence industry.
The Shipbuilding Employment Pathways program will also play a key role in meeting the demand for skilled workers, specifically for trades related to nuclear-powered submarine and naval shipbuilding industries. The program will support trade qualifications for 125 apprentices over the next two years.
With a projected 5,500 direct jobs to be created in South Australia during the construction of nuclear-powered submarines, and 2,000 jobs to be sustained by the Hunter class frigates, the state’s role in shaping the nation’s defence capabilities is undeniable.
“The Defence Industry Pathways Program and Shipbuilding Employment Pathways initiative enable people of all ages and stages of their careers to get involved, ensuring South Australia’s workforce is equipped with the skills needed for this monumental task,” said Minister Mullighan.
The programs will be delivered by Peer Education Employment and Training (PEER) in partnership with TAFE SA.
