South Australians can now register their interest in two exciting new training and employment programs to equip them for a career in the state’s growing defence industry.
The Australian and South Australian Governments have launched the Defence Industry Pathways Program and the Shipbuilding Employment Pathways Program, set to benefit nearly 300 young South Australians.
These initiatives will provide trainees and apprentices, including school leavers with high-quality training, hands-on experience, and the opportunity for full-time employment, supported by ongoing mentorship to ensure successful program completion.
The Defence Industry Pathways Program includes a 12-month traineeship that leads to a Certificate III qualification in various fields such as manufacturing, engineering, computing, and cyber security. Meanwhile, the Shipbuilding Employment Pathways Program offers apprentices the opportunity to pursue a Certificate III in specialised areas including fabrication, mechanical engineering, and electrotechnology.
The South Australian Government has partnered with Peer Education Employment & Training Ltd (PEER) and TAFE SA to deliver these programs. PEER is now accepting expressions of interest, with the first group of trainees and apprentices expected to begin in March 2025.
The demand for skilled workers in South Australia’s defence industry is projected to surge, with nuclear-powered submarines construction estimated to create up to 5,500 jobs at its peak. Meanwhile, the Hunter class frigate construction at Osborne is expected to sustain at least 2,000 jobs and generate an additional 500 new roles over the next decade.
SA Minister for Defence and Space Industries, Stephen Mullighan said that this surge in demand for skilled workers means South Australians will have access to thousands of career opportunities.
“Through the Defence Industry Pathways Program and the Shipbuilding Employment Pathways, we’re proud to partner with the Commonwealth Government to support people of all ages and backgrounds into these roles,” Mr Mullighan added.
