Not-for-profit organisation Business in Schools has launched a statewide program supporting girls and women to explore careers in non-traditional occupations and industries.
Making Her Mark has been developed to inspire, encourage and educate females from the ages of 16 to 60 to embrace a variety of career choices without the restraint of gender stereotypes.
Currently, the initiative’s website features access to role models, pathways, resources and support in entering a vast range of industries.
Business in Schools Board Member and Principal of Springbank Secondary College, Wendy House, said the initiative aims to breakdown gender norms and encourage by sharing experiences and making connections.
“Girls and women can’t be what they can’t see,” said Ms House.
“We are creating opportunities, including helping students identify and achieve their goals in life after school by increasing awareness of the business world, as well as encouraging teachers and industry leaders to create more authentic learning experiences and bridging gaps between learning and life.”
The program was launched at an event on 1 March at the Adelaide Convention Centre with over 130 female secondary students and 70 guests from industry, education, government and the community. It featured a keynote presentation Making Her Mark Role Model Shoal Group’s Senior Systems Engineer, Shena Howell, who is passionate about empowering women in the engineering industry.
“I’m making my mark by being present and visible, engaging the next generation of girls in engineering and science, and showing them that you don’t need to change who you are to work in this field,” said Ms Howell.
The South Australian Government, through the South Australian Space Industry Centre, is proud to sponsor Making Her Mark to inspire and empower more women to follow education and career pathways in engineering and science.
