South Australia continues to lead the nation in naval shipbuilding, with BAE Systems Australia celebrating the graduation of its first cohort of Hunter Class frigate program apprentices at Osborne Naval Shipyard.
The program is a cornerstone of Australia’s naval capability and a driver of long-term jobs for South Australians. It also represents one of many pathways into South Australia’s thriving defence industry, offering job seekers the chance to build future-proof careers in a sector that is growing, innovative and vital to the nation’s security.
Since 2020, apprentices have been training in critical trades including steelwork, mechanical, electrical and technical disciplines – skills essential to delivering advanced warships for the Royal Australian Navy.
This month, 22 apprentices completed their training and joined the 2,300-strong workforce building the Hunter Class frigates. Their qualifications span steelwork, piping, electrical and detailed design trades, including school-based apprentices and experienced welders who formalised their skills through a Certificate III in Fabrication.
The Hunter Class frigate program is creating thousands of jobs and building sovereign capability in South Australia. Across all cohorts, there are now 105 apprentices, including 47 new starters in 2025.
Georgette Elston, Head of Resourcing and Early Careers at BAE Systems Australia, said the program is delivering more than ships.
“We are proud to welcome our first graduating cohort of apprentices. This program is creating thousands of Australian jobs while building national security and resilience,” said Ms Elston.
For graduates like Izzy, who began as a school-based apprentice and now works in Quality Control to become a welding inspector, the experience has been life-changing.
“It’s definitely been challenging, but very rewarding. I feel like a completely different person. I was so timid at the start but I’m not afraid to make conversation anymore,” said Izzy.
The achievements of this pioneering group highlight South Australia’s role in delivering critical naval capability while creating sustainable careers for generations to come.
The Hunter Class frigate program, delivered by BAE Systems at Osborne Naval Shipyard, will provide nine advanced anti-submarine warfare frigates to the Royal Australian Navy, supporting Australia’s future maritime security.
