South Australia is leading the way in Australia’s defence industry. As the home of the nation’s new fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS Pillar I, the state is playing a pivotal role in strengthening national security and supporting regional stability.
But submarines are just the beginning.
South Australia is also a key contributor to AUKUS Pillar II, focused on advanced capabilities such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, cyber, and undersea warfare.
The state boasts a thriving defence ecosystem that includes seven of the world’s top 10 defence companies, more than 400 small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), leading research institutions, and dedicated government agencies. Together, they are collaborating to deliver cutting-edge capabilities across the land, aerospace, cyber, space and maritime domains.
With world-class infrastructure, a thriving innovation ecosystem and a highly skilled workforce, South Australia is uniquely positioned to lead the nation’s defence ambitions. With sustained long-term growth and significant investment flowing into the sector, there has never been a better time to consider a career in defence industry.
While many roles are in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), the industry offers more than just technical careers. From project management and logistics to communications, cyber security, trades and skilled labour, there are opportunities for people from all backgrounds and experience levels. The South Australian Government is also investing in new technical colleges to help young people gain the skills needed to thrive in this growing industry.
From elite athlete to defence industry leader
For Glenn Rypp, a South Australian engineer and former elite athlete, the defence industry offered the perfect place to combine his passion for performance with purpose.
The difference between winning and losing in sport at an elite level ultimately comes down to how you find extra milliseconds or millimetres.
Having been selected to represent Australia 12 times in canoe and kayak competitions, Glenn brings that same mindset to his role at KBR; constantly seeking out improvements, no matter how small.
KBR is a global defence and infrastructure company with around 2,000 employees across Australia. With more than 65 years of local experience, the company delivers solutions across the defence, energy, resources, water and transport sectors.
As Director, Technical Capability, Glenn is responsible for developing new ways of working that improve the company’s overall performance.
“Enhancements to project management and engineering capability don’t have to be big to make a difference. Even the most incremental changes add up over time,” he says. “It’s important to keep looking for those opportunities that will give our business an edge.”
Glenn says he finds great satisfaction in helping make KBR a place people are proud to work, while improving efficiency and keeping safety at the forefront.
“This also enhances our relationships with suppliers as they are also looking for partners that are easy to do business with as well as compliant, have a good culture and are cost-effective.”
Educated and trained as an engineer in South Australia, Glenn was drawn to KBR by the opportunity to lead continuous business improvement and personal alignment with the company’s culture and values.
“A lot of companies talk about culture, but what has really impressed me since I joined last year is that KBR stands by its values and they are visible in action, every single day,” he says. “When you’re a values-driven business that puts people first, business growth naturally follows. That’s certainly been my experience.”
A place for everyone
Glenn’s story is just one example of how people from all different backgrounds are finding their place in South Australia’s defence industry. Whether you’re a student, a tradesperson, a STEM graduate, or someone looking for a new challenge, there’s a pathway for you.
